The Sabattus Mountain Trail

Sabattus Mountain, located in Center Lovell, offers one of the area’s most rewarding short hikes. At just about 1.5 miles round trip, this trail provides an excellent option for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking for a quick outdoor adventure with a beautiful scenic payoff. The trailhead is easily accessible from Sabattus Road, and parking is available near the base, making it a convenient stop for both locals and visitors. As you may know, your MPA dues help pay the LEA to inspect several small sections of the lake with divers once a year. That said, the LEA’s examination is limited to areas near the two public boat launches, the narrows that divide the middle basin from the north and south basins and several private marinas adjacent to the larger neighborhoods on Moose Pond. This leaves a significant portion of our lake uninspected and vulnerable to undiscovered infestations. The MPA’s Lake Section Captain initiative closes that gap.
The trail begins with a steady but manageable ascent through a classic Maine forest of hemlock, pine, and birch. Along the way, hikers will notice moss-covered rocks, wildflowers in the warmer months, and the sound of songbirds adding to the tranquil atmosphere. While the climb is short, it provides just enough elevation gain to feel like an invigorating workout without being overwhelming.
At the summit, the reward is spectacular. An open ledge offers panoramic views of the White Mountains to the west (including Mount Washington on a clear day) as well as sweeping vistas of Kezar Lake below. This viewpoint is especially stunning during autumn, when the surrounding hillsides blaze with fall foliage, but it is equally beautiful in spring and summer. Many hikers bring a picnic to enjoy at the top before making the short descent.
Sabattus Mountain is a hidden gem that captures the best of Maine hiking – accessibility, natural beauty, and big views in a small package. It’s a must-do for anyone exploring the Center Lovell area.
To find the trail head, start at the intersection of Routes 5 and 93 in Lovell. Follow Route 5 north for 4.5 miles to Center Lovell and turn right on Sabattus Road. Follow Sabattus Road 1.5 miles bearing right at the fork onto Sabattus Trail Road. By continuing another 0.7 miles you will see the trailhead parking lot on the right-hand side.
The trail is a loop, so you can start in either direction!
